San Diego, CA. 6 June 2007. The Electromagnetic Systems (EMS) Division of General Atomics (GA) is a key sponsor of the San Diego iBotics Student Engineering Society team in its quest for the prize in the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) Autonomous Underwater Vehicles competition. The contest will be held at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center – San Diego, 11-15 July 2007.
GA EMS will be providing funding to support this endeavor and members of the Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) engineering team at EMS will be providing engineering mentoring for the team from their new facilities in Rancho Bernardo. Mike Reed, Senior Vice President for EMS stated, “We are looking forward to helping these young students successfully compete in the next AUVSI AUV competition and along the way develop good young engineering talent that might find a home at General Atomics.”
GA is engaged in the development of new UUV technologies for the Navy and views this sponsorship opportunity as a way to nurture interest in the critical technologies associated with these types of systems at the collegiate level and increase awareness of the future of UUVs in the Navy to further stimulate student interest in this field.
General Atomics, founded in 1955, specializes in diversified research, development, and manufacturing in defense, energy, and other advanced technologies. Affiliated manufacturing and commercial service companies include General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc., which produces the Predator® family of unmanned aerial systems.
