SAN DIEGO, CA, 17 JAN 2018 – General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) announced today that it has developed a new capacitor technology capable of operating at high voltages and at temperatures as high as 500⁰C. The high voltage, high temperature capacitors allow for more stable operation of power electronics at voltages >1000 V and across more extreme temperature ranges.
“This new high voltage capacitor technology offers a significant benefit to customers developing ultra-high temperature power electronics,” stated Scott Forney, president of GA-EMS. “Often, capacitors on the market today are limited to only a few hundred volts, limiting their application. Others have properties that change significantly across different temperature ranges, resulting in variances in capacitor behavior. Our new high voltage, high temp capacitors offer more stable capacitance up to the maximum rating, making them useful across a broader application and temperature range.”
GA-EMS is a leader in the development and manufacture of high energy density capacitors, pulsed power modules and directed energy technologies for complex defense systems and demanding operating environments. GA-EMS’ new unique capacitor technology design allows for a more compact form factor for applications requiring stacks of capacitors. In addition, the high voltage capacitors are particularly well suited for high temperature pulsed power applications to suppress voltage spikes that can damage semiconductor switches.
“The inherent properties of this technology allows for greater operational stability in circuits, helping improve system performance in high rep rate pulsed applications, as well as systems developed for other applications such as space exploration and down-hole oil recovery,” stated Mark Schneider, manager of capacitor research, development and engineering at GA-EMS. “We are currently fielding these high voltage, high temperature capacitors for specialized applications and customers, and expect commercial availability starting in the fourth quarter of 2018.”
